More Details Released in Waterloo Officer-Involved Shooting

DCI Continuing Investigation

New details have been released regarding Monday’s officer involved shooting in Waterloo. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said that employees at Victory Motors called 911 to report a neighbor pointing a gun at an employee’s face and firing a round at the property on Monday at 2:46 p.m. The man has been identified as 41-year-old John Piazza of Waterloo. Employees told police that he said he would return to the store with a rifle. Police responded behind Victory Motors and saw a man matching the description that employees gave. DCI officials said Piazza pointed a long rifle out of his home window at officers. A Waterloo police officer fired a round at Piazza, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer has since been placed on critical incident leave. The DCI is still investigating the case and will forward the results of the investigation to the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office for review.
