Body Discovered on Cedar River Sandbar Near LaPorte City

Black Hawk County Sheriff’s officials are investigating after a body was discovered on a sandbar of the Cedar River between La Porte City and Gilbertville on Sunday. Deputies say that the body appeared to have been burned. They believe that the person was canoeing alone on the river, and that he intended to spend the night on the sandbar. Preliminary evidence indicates no signs of foul play. Officials say that the individual may have tripped into a bonfire at the campsite. The name of the victim is not being released at this time. An autopsy will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner.
