Waterloo Council Approves Police Chief’s New Contract
Annual Salary Second Highest Among Iowa Cities Chiefs

The Waterloo City Council Monday night approved a new four-year contract for the city’s police chief. The vote was 6-1 for the new contract, which would make Waterloo Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald the second-highest-paid Police Chief in the state. The new contract gives him an annual salary of $165,000. This is a boost in base pay of over $23,000. Under the terms of the new contract, Fitzgerald would receive one year’s severance pay with full health benefits should he be terminated from the position. Councilman Dave Boesen cast the lone no vote against the contract, partly on the severance pay issue.
