Four People Dead at Eastern Iowa State Park
Cedar Falls Family Identified in Triple-Homicide

Three campers from Cedar Falls were found dead, plus a gunman, in the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground on Friday, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Officers responded to the scene just before 7:00AM Friday morning. Officers located 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sherwin’s body was found before noon. On Friday evening, the DCI identified the three as 42-year old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year old daughter Lula. No connection or motive has been identified as yet between Sherwin and the Schmidts. Everyone else at the campground was evacuated. The park will remain closed until further notice, though there is no longer a threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing. The State Medical Examiner will conduct autopsies of all three victims. Once completed, the findings will be released. In addition, the State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on Sherwin.
