After about an hour of discussion on Monday night, the Cedar Falls City Council voted 5-1 on a first reading of an ordinance that would allow for fireworks to be shot off on private property between noon and 11 p.m. July 4 and between noon and 10 p.m. July 3 and 5. This would be a reversal from the ban put in place several years ago. This comes after joint discussions last week with the Waterloo City Council on their ordinance. The plan is to make the ordinance similar to Waterloo’s ordinance. Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green says there’s not a lot of time to get the ordinance passed by council.
Green says he’d like to see the ordinance pass in time for fireworks dealers to begin their sales next month.
According to the ordinance, fines for infractions also would be hiked from a minimum $250 to $375.
