Donations have been pouring in to help provide for the 9 year old Cedar Falls boy who was the lone survivor of the shooting Friday that killed his parents and 6-year old sister at a state park near Maquoketa. An original goal of $100,000 on a GoFundMe page set up for Arlo Schmidt has already gone to over $171,000, donated by over 3,400 people as of Sunday night. Tyler and Sarah Schmidt and daughter Lula were shot and killed while camping at Maquoketa Caves State Park on Friday morning. Authorities say that 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska then fled the park and later shot and killed himself. Arlo Schmidt was with his family and survived.
In the meantime, the Cedar Falls Public Library will be collecting items for a memorial to the Schmidts. The library will accept cards, mementos, and drawings, in remembrance of Sarah, Tyler, and Lula, during regular library hours. Items can be placed in the front atrium.
