At least 18 citations have been issued by Cedar Falls Police for violating the city’s new Fireworks ordinance as of midnight on Sunday. In a release issued just after midnight, officials say the citations were for shooting off fireworks on city streets and sidewalks, on Cedar Falls School property and for using them after the 10:00PM deadline. Public Safety Director Craig Berte says first offense violations carry a fine of $375, plus $95 court costs, for a total of $470. Cedar Falls citizens are reminded that fireworks are only allowed to be used on private property and not on city-owned property, public sidewalks, or parking lots. In addition, Cedar Falls Fire Rescue, responded to three separate dumpster fires Sunday night. In all three cases, fireworks debris is suspected to be the cause of each fire. Fire officials say to place the fireworks debris in a bucket of water when possible, as a way to safely dispose of the fireworks debris.
Fireworks can be used on July 4th, from noon until 11:00PM, and on July 5th, from noon until 10:00PM.
