Waterloo Receives $642K EPA Grant for Cleanup of Former Rath Site

The US Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 presented a $642,400 ceremonial check to the City of Waterloo on Thursday. The event was located in the new Crystal Cold Storage site at 1656 Sycamore Street. EPA officials selected the City of Waterloo for cleanup of the former Rath Packing Company buildings property, a site contaminated with asbestos-containing building materials. The packing company was closed and liquidated in 1985. 

Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart says this is a great day for Waterloo.

Crystal Cold President Tom Poe says they’re looking forward to future opportunities for growth and to add more to their workforce.

Crystal Cold then had a ribbon cutting ceremony after the check announcement at the opening of its new refrigerated facility.
