Fitzgerald to Resign As Waterloo Police Chief

Chief Takes Position in Colorado; Leibold to be Interim Police Chief

The city of Waterloo has announced that Police Chief Dr. Joel Fitzgerald will resign effective Friday.  Dr. Fitzgerald has accepted a position in Colorado. Assistant Chief Joe Leibold will assume the role of interim Chief of Police.  In a release on Wednesday, Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart said, “(t)he competition for highly educated and experienced professionals keeps getting tougher, especially when competing against larger markets for skilled talent.” He added, “(w)e wish the Fitzgerald family well and thank Joel for all he accomplished in his time here.”  Leibold has been on the Waterloo Police force since 1990, and was appointed Assistant Chief last year.
