High School Football Playoffs Begin Tonight

The high school football playoffs begin tonight with a bundle of area teams in action. Here in Cedar Falls, the Tigers will play host to Davenport Central at the UNI-Dome tonight. Central features the leading running back in all of Class 4A in Zach Minch, who Tiger co-head coach Pat Mitchell says reminds him of a hybrid of two former Cedar Falls stars.

You can hear the Tigers over on Cruisin’ 1250 this evening. Pregame coverage begins with a special playoff edition of the Cedar Valley Scouting Report at 4:45.
Both Waterloo schools will be on the road tonight. East High is making their third straight postseason appearance and faces a Davenport Assumption team that may be without leading rusher James Hua, who suffered a knee injury in Assumption’s game last Friday night. Trojan coach Kody Asmus says his team is preparing as if Hua will be available.

West High is in the postseason for the first time since 1991. The Wahawks were the last team in and draw #2 Iowa City West tonight. Wahawk coach Lonnie Moore says his team knows there’s no pressure on them.

In Class 3A, Waverly-Shell Rock is the only area team in the postseason. The Go-Hawks visit South Tama tonight.
Moving to 2A, the Union Knights are looking for another deep run into the playoffs after winning the 3A title a year ago. Union opens against Mount Vernon, a team uses two quarterbacks with very different skills. But Knights coach Joe Hadachek says his team won’t alter their defense depending on who is in the game.

You’ll hear the Union-Mount Vernon game right here on 1650 The Fan tonight. Pregame coverage will begin with the playoff edition of the Cedar Valley Scouting Report starting after an abbreviated version of “On The Mat” at 5:45.
Moving to Class 1A, the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons don’t have much time to lick their wounds after a double overtime loss to rival Dike-New Hartford last Friday. The Falcons face defending state champs Saint Ansgar, the team the knocked them out of the postseason a year ago. Falcon coach Alex Pollock says the game has the earmarks of an old-school playoff contest.

Other 1A games tonight include Dike-New Hartford hosting Denver, Nashua-Plainfield playing at Sumner-Fredericksburg, and Hudson visiting South Winneshiek.
In Class A, second ranked Wapsie Valley opens the postseason at home against Iowa Valley, while North Tama hosts Turkey Valley.
Don Bosco is a playoff team in their first season as an eight-player program. The Dons face West Central tonight, and will be focused on Blue Devil running back Michael Lincoln, the leading rusher in the eight-player division. Dons coach Kolby Yoder says Lincoln is a tough runner.

Also in eight man tonight, Janesville plays at Springville and Clarksville hosts Lansing Kee.
